Gifting my Friend w/ a Living Room Makeover

As an Interior Designer I’m constantly asked by friends and family to assist them with designing their homes. This time when my friend asked for my assistance designing the living room of her newly purchased home, she was in for a treat for sure!

Instead of providing her with design direction, I decided to team up with Home Depot to gift her an entire living room makeover as the ultimate Christmas gift! I called on my friends at Home Depot to assist me with making this happen because as you may already know; they sell some of the best furniture and accessories on their site (and some products in store).

BEFORE

The living room already had a good neutral foundation to work with, seeing that the walls were recently painted and new floors had been installed. Although I wanted to paint the space a dark and moody paint color, I decided to leave the walls alone and focus on the elephant in the room; the tan-ish ceiling.

As you can see, the ceiling was partially painted by the previous owner but it seems as if they ran out of paint when they got to the living room. (LOL) But, before I painted the ceiling, I removed the chandelier because trying painting around it wasn't an option for me. I would’ve been left with the old paint color exposed once the new fixture with a smaller housing was installed.

Remember to always cut off the power in the room when installing and uninstalling light fixtures. Also, if you’re not experienced with doing these kinds of tasks, please consult with a licensed electrician to ensure that it’s properly installed.

Pro Tip: If you intend to paint a textured ceiling like this, be sure to get the paint roller that’s best suited for texture ceilings/walls. It a bit’s fluffier than a regular roller so it ensures that you’re getting paint in every crevice without a ton of work.

Wow, the fresh coat of paint on the ceiling made quite the difference! Not only does the ceiling feel a bit taller, the room is much brighter! In a perfect world we would’ve removed the texture from the ceilings, but that’s something we will tackle later down the line. Mainly because the textured ceilings are throughout the entire house and would be such an extensive undertaking.

As the ceiling dried, I began bringing in all of the furniture and accessories to complete the space. This part was quite easy because I had already planned the best layout for this space prior to ordering any furniture.

The space came together beautifully! I tried to find my favorite element in the space and it was so hard to choose. It’s a tie between the chandelier, swivel chair and marble coffee table, but I just can’t bring myself to choose. Actually, we don’t have to choose; we can love everything equally! Speaking of loving things equally, you know I had to use my favorite Hubspace light bulbs for the lamps. Now my friend can turn her lamps on and off using her Hubspace App while she’s away. -They’re a game changer these days because it’s getting dark much earlier, so now she doesn’t have to come home to a dark house!

In the entry, I brought in this lovely arched mirror and a DIY Waterfall edge console table to provide a spot for the family to drop their keys and take a look in the mirror before heading out. The console table is the same exact one I built for my office, except this was the sample version I made when trying to perfect my mitered cuts. But so glad it’s out of my garage and in its new home.

This was such a fun project to work on! To see the sheer joy on my friend’s face really warmed my heart. Thanks so much for reading and I hope you’ve enjoyed this makeover! Thanks again to our sponsor Home Depot for making this happen. Be sure to check out their site and stores for all things home; they’re my favorite one stop shop!
